COMPOSTING:

Participate in Lions Bay's waste reduction goals by composting. For details on composting in Bear Country refer to this brochure. You can order the recommended Earth Machine Composter and other accessories through the Village Office.

GARBAGE:

When purchasing your garbage can, please be aware that many cans are larger than 77 litres. Most garbage cans with wheels are 121 litres or larger. The Village of Lions Bay specifies no more than 154 litres of garbage, per household, per week. Therefore, if you do decide to buy larger cans, please be aware that if you fill them to capacity, they might not be emptied.

The Village of Lions Bay and the Bear Smart Committee recommends the purchase of Animal Resistant Garbage containers. These containers can be purchased through the Village Office.

  • Residents are requested to put their garbage at curbside after 5:00 AM on collection day to avoid attracting wildlife.
  • A limit of 2 garbage cans per home applies.
  • If residents have additional cans for collection, garbage tags can be purchased at the Village Office for $4 each.
  • If storing garbage outside, ensure the container is secured to the building.
  • It is recommended to store meat and fish in the freezer until garbage day to avoid strong attractant smells.

Wildlife and Bear Resistant Bin Program

Waste Management Bylaw 425 focus on areas in the Village where there are regular wildlife and bear interactions. Following calls about bears getting into garbage, residents may receive an "Official Notice" requiring that garbage be placed in secure cans with tight fitting lids.

As well, residents will be required to store garbage either indoors or inside a secure enclosure between collection days. Following this notice, residents who fail to securely enclose their garbage could receive a $320 fine.
