Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD)

Lions Bay is a member municipality of the Metro Vancouver Regional District (Metro, or MVRD), which comprises 21 municipalities, an electoral area and one treaty First Nation.  Members of Council, usually the Mayor, are appointed to by Council to Lions Bay's one seat on the Metro board, and the Chair of the board may appoint further members of Council to MVRD's Committees.  Lions Bay does not sit on the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) and Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District (GVSDD) boards as we do not receive water or sewer services from Metro.

Metro's direct impacts on Lions Bay include solid waste regulation, air quality regulation (including wood burning appliances), climate change and greenhouse gas target, and being the local government for Electoral Area A surrounding the municipality.

In 2021 Lions Bay advocated for and received Metro's designation as Rural and outside its Urban Containment Boundary, resulting in some relaxation of wood burning appliance regulations.  While the municipality does not receive drinking water from Metro, its staff have been very helpful to Lions Bay staff in water planning and operations.
