Battani Creek Slide Update: Emergency Operations and Search Efforts
The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) continues to coordinate an active and comprehensive response to the recent debris flow incident. Today, a geotechnical team conducted a full walkthrough of the debris field, from top to bottom, and deployed aerial reconnaissance to evaluate the site. Their findings confirm that the debris flow field remains unstable. As a result, ongoing geotechnical monitoring will continue, and the site will be reassessed for stability following the current rain event.
Wednesday, December 18, a structural engineer will assess the stability of a wood bridge critical for transporting heavy equipment into the area. At the same time, a hazard tree faller will begin work to address high-risk trees in and around the debris field. In preparation for these operations, heavy equipment will be staged, with geotechnical engineers remaining on-site to monitor stability and ensure safety during the debris cleanup process.
Personnel deployment levels will remain consistent to maintain continuity of operations, with all activities coordinated through the fully operational Incident Command Post (ICP) supported through the Emergency Operations Centre. Aerial reconnaissance and logistical support operations have concluded, and airspace restrictions (NOTAMs) have been issued to enhance safety, including the prohibition of personal drone use. To further ensure security and public safety, the State of Local Emergency (SOLE) declaration area has been expanded, restricting access near the ICP and the debris flow zone.
Restoration of essential infrastructure is also underway. BC Hydro crews will begin work tomorrow to restore powerlines in the affected areas.
The EOC remains focused on continued search activities, stabilizing the site, and mitigating further risks, at this time.
